How safe are the Apps you download for your business?

Do you use the popular Android app, "Barcode Scanner?" The app has racked up more than 10 million downloads on Google's Play Store and is one of the most popular apps.

Google recently pulled the plug, removing the app from the store after it had been there for years.

Why the change of heart?  Sometime during December 2020, an update to the code saw the injection of malware.

We see many users give mobile  apps they use regularly free reign when it comes to downloading and installing updates. In this case, if you let your Barcode Scanner auto-update, the update installed a nasty Trojan on your smartphone that allows hackers complete control over the device. Not something you want on any day!

So do how do you mitigate the risks for you and your business?

  1. Delete apps you no longer use....its all about minimizing your exposure.
  2.  Verify you have Google Play Protect turned on.  This will scan all apps are on your device.
  3. Make sure any sensitive accounts have 2 factor  turned on.  This adds another layer of protection (think hurdle) a perpetrator needs to go through should a bad app slip through.
